Carpets are still very popular. And no wonder! They provide a unique look and comfort of the home. Carpets give the interior a touch of design, comfort and warmth.

However, it is true that they are more difficult to maintain than laminate or other hard floors. We do not even recommend neglecting their care, as they can be an incubator for various mites, bacteria and a magnet for dust, dirt, hair and animal hair.

But don’t be put off! We have a few tips for you on how to easily and effortlessly keep the carpet clean and beautiful as from a box.

Don’t underestimate regularity

The regularity of carpet maintenance is very important. In this case, we are talking mainly about regular vacuuming . Dirt is very easily caught and trampled into carpets, but it is all the more difficult to get the dirt out of there.

Regular vacuuming, at least once a week, will prevent excessive carpet contamination and ingestion of dirt into it.

How often it is advisable to vacuum the carpet also depends on the type of carpet you have at home, the material from which it is made, as well as the cleaning instructions given on the manufacturer’s label.

Relatively difficult to maintain are carpets with long pile , so-called. shaggy rugs, which are recommended to be vacuumed several times a week.

The regularity of carpet maintenance also depends on the number of people or animals in the household. The more family members a household has, the more often it is necessary to vacuum the carpet, and especially if the family also has animal members who let go of hair.

1. Carpet cleaning options

Vacuuming is one of the most basic and necessary ways of regular carpet cleaning. We have already said something about the need for regular vacuuming. But are you vacuuming properly?

It may sound ridiculous, but it doesn’t matter how the carpet is vacuumed . To vacuum the household and carpet as efficiently as possible, try the following:

  • Before vacuuming, first wipe the dust off window sills, furniture and blinds – when wiping the dust, the remnants of dust and small scraps fall to the ground and stir up some of the dust. Subsequent vacuuming can effectively remove these residues.
  • Vacuum in all directions – lift the carpet from left to right and from front to back. This will get deeper between the fibers of the carpet and clean it more precisely.

2. Dry carpet cleaning

In addition to vacuuming, it is sometimes advisable to dry clean the carpet using detergents designed for dry carpet cleaning. These are powder compositions , resp. dry foam , which is applied to the carpet after vacuuming and left to act for some time.

These funds can be purchased in drugstores or specialized stores. They are gentle enough and you do not have to worry about damage, even if the carpet is made of natural materials or the floor under the carpet.

Wool, silk or Persian carpets can be cleaned dry .

How to proceed:

  • Vacuum the carpet first.  This will remove common dirt.
  • Then apply dry powder or foam  to the entire surface of the carpet  (follow the instructions).
  • In the case of carpets with longer hair, incorporate the product into the carpet with a brush.
  • Leave the product on.
  • Then thoroughly vacuum the remaining powder with bound impurities.

3. Wet carpet cleaning

For excessively soiled carpets, you must resort to the wet carpet cleaning method, which is a bit more time consuming to perform than the dry cleaning method and is not suitable for all types of carpets.

We definitely do not recommend wet cleaning if you have wool or silk carpets, as water could destroy the strength of the fibers. This cleaning method is more suitable for man-made carpets.

Moisture will penetrate under the carpet, so pay attention to the surface under your carpet. You could easily damage wooden floors in this way.

Wet cleaning practically means cleaning the carpet with water with detergent and a brush .

When wet cleaning, you cannot use the carpet immediately, it needs some time for it to dry, and you should not step on it during the first hours of drying.

How to proceed:

  • Again, the carpet must be vacuumed first.
  • Prepare the cleaning agent according to the instructions.
  • Sponge the foam and rub it into the carpet.
  • After drying out of the carpet, vacuum the residue.

4. Instrumental carpet cleaning

Apparatus cleaning is a wet method of cleaning carpets using special appliances designed for this purpose. These are relatively expensive devices that are not worth buying for a regular household, so it is better to just borrow such a device from time to time .

The vacuum cleaner for wet cleaning can playfully and effectively cope with ingrained stains and give the carpet a new breath. Such a vacuum cleaner has a built-in container for water and cleaning agent, which are blown into the carpet fibers during high-pressure cleaning and can thus remove stains and dirt deposited deep between the fibers.

5. Knocking

If you grew up or lived in a housing estate, you will definitely remember the metal structures for knocking out carpets that were placed next to the blocks of flats.

People pulled out their carpet, hung it over a “knocker” and thoroughly dusted the carpet. They cleared him of the settled dust. This way you can “refresh” and ventilate your carpet even today.
